Gandhi Movie Summary :: Film Movie

The movie Gandhi starts off with the assassination of Gandhi on January 30, 1948. He was killed because of the split of Hindus and Muslims into Pakistan and India, instead of trying to keep the country united (which was impossible at the time). The story then jumps back to Gandhi early in his life, when he is a practicing attorney. He is traveling in South Africa on a train and is thrown off because he refuses to give up his first class seat. The conductor wants him to move because he is Indian. This upsets him and he organizes a burning of the discriminatory codes. The protestors are arrested and released. Gandhi is motivated by religious means; he believes that everyone is equal in God’s eyes. He gets involved in several movements for equality, and he stresses non-violence very strongly. The Indians are very mad because British rule continues to limit their rights. They are supposed to all get fingerprinted, and their marriage laws are invalid. Gandhi’s followers vow to fight their oppressors to the death, but he discourages them from violence. He and his wife form a sort of commune of purity. They live off of the land entirely. During one scene, they ask all of Gandhi’s followers to burn all of their clothes that were made in Britain and wear only what they can make themselves. Gandhi practices this for the rest of his life, usually wearing just a loincloth. In another scene, Gandhi is in jail, and some of his followers are peacefully gathered in a square. The police lock up the square and kill almost everyone, over 1,500 people. Gandhi is disgusted and discouraged. He continues to preach non-violence, but the Indians do have occasional conflict with the police. Gandhi’s counter to the popular phrase â€Å"an eye for an eye† says that after that, â€Å"everyone will be blind.† Gandhi leads several organized protests against British rule. In one, all Indians stopped doing their work, and the major cities in the country were disabled. Another time, he led a 165-mile walk to the sea to protest the British monopoly on salt. The Indians made their own salt out of the sea. A turning point on the Indian fight for independence was the western press. Reporters witnessed a scene in which Indians tried to get into a factory row by row, and were brutally beaten by soldiers, row by row, as the women pulled the dead and injured away.

Intercultural Conflict Analysis Essay

In the Southeast Asian region lays a body of water and islands which have been disputed about for the possession of them. This area by international term is known as the â€Å"South China Sea.† (Keep in mind that they do not have any correlations with China but it is rather just an international name.) This body of water runs along territories belonging to China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Philippines, and many other countries. Within this body of water, there are well over 200 islands which are un-inhabited by people and contain useful resources. Considering that the sea does not surround just one country which can claim authority over it, it is difficult to determine who has the right to these islands. There are no laws on who these islands belong to. This dispute brings into many questions about sovereignty, law of the sea, and resource ownership rights on an international level if more than one country surrounds the sea. This is also representative of the economic relation s among countries in the larger Asia-Pacific region, especially in the South China Sea area. Its dynamic and cooperative approach to economic matters has attracted more partnerships with various countries and organizations across the globe. The area is potentially rich in oil and natural gas deposits; however, the estimates are highly varied. The Ministry of Geological Resources and Mining of the People’s Republic of China estimate that the South China Sea may contain 17.7 billion tons of crude oil (compared to Kuwait with 13 billion tons) The South China Sea territorial dispute has become one of the most problematic issues in recent times. Current trends as well as complications resulting from China’s rise and its conflict with anxious neighbors have seemingly put any solution out of reach in the near future. However, there are still steps that rival claimants can take in order minimize the chance of major conflict. Before any international agreement is hastily signed, claimant countries must first resolve internal hindrances to treaties. This most especially refers to China. A good preliminary step for the country would be to strictly implement a more centralized command of its maritime law enforcement and administrative agencies. After it has done this, it can now proceed to engage in agreements with other nations without the high prospect of one of its own violating any treaty provisions. Additionally, all claimant countries should limit if not stop the negative propaganda surrounding thedispute. The South China Sea issue is better perceived by people if it is seen as a source of cooperation rather than competition. Disproportionate national sentiment stemming from negative propaganda about the disputes allows less room for movement for government officials, and makes diplomacy difficult. Claimant countries can choose to coordinate a joint exploration of resources in order to arrive at a win-win scenario, instead of insidiously encroaching their way into oil sources, and ending up having to forfeit them when other claimant countries cry foul. Lastly, all countries involved must work to deescalate tensions and strive for resource sharing and regional cooperation. This could be done by making and implementing a legally binding code of conduct with legitimate mechanisms for settling disputes. If these steps can be done, then probably, the prospect of a stable multi-polar world is not that far off. Remember that it takes the correct blend of these nine sorts of competitors to make the ideal group. Work Cited Dunleavy, Aidan O. Studies in the Sociology of Sport: Refereed Proceedings of the 2. Health Promotion - 793 Words

There have been a lot of changes in healthcare over the years. Traditionally, the healthcare system in the United States has been focused on caring for the sick and treating and preventing diseases. But a new standard has developed. Focus has now shifted to health promotion. Nurses with evidenced based practice to inform children, as well as their parents, of the effects of smoking, conducted these programs and studies. Through Close Analysis of a Single Poem free essay sample

Through Close Analysis of a Single Poem, Discuss the Ways Which Harrison Explores the Theme of Education and Its Impact on His Life By Lockhart Through close analysis of a single poem, discuss the ways which Harrison explores the theme of education and its impact on his life Education is a key theme within Harridans poetry as the impact it had upon his own life was fundamental to making him the person and poet he is today. This was mainly due to the fact he attended a middle class grammar school, the culture of which clashed dramatically with the working class environment he was brought up in. Many of Harridans poems express a reluctance to overlook his roots and a rebellious urge to beat the system. However, they also recognize that in order to succeed in any literary career, he must succumb to the middle class way. This duality affected all aspects of his life and inevitably distanced him from his family and friends in many ways, radically changing him as a person. In his poem Them and Lug] I ; II Harrison discusses his sense of cultural otherness at his grammar school and how he aimed to defy them to stay true to his identity. The fact that the poem is a stretched sonnet immediately conveys how he wanted to do things his own way, even if it meant breaking the rules. One way Harrison explores how education impacted upon his life in this work is through the theme of conformity. The poem expresses Harridans reluctance to conform to middle class social principles, yet also the necessity. This pressure is articulated primarily through the voice of his grammar school teacher. Poetry is the speech of kings and We say [ z] not Lug] shows that the teacher strongly associates poetry and literature tit Received Pronunciation (RPR) and the middle/upper classes and does not approve of Harridans inferior background. The irregular rhythm throughout the first stanza reflects the stuttered Dementedness but also sets an aggressive, dramatic tone mirroring his past feelings towards his teacher. This is reinforced further after Harrison reads the first line of Ode too nightingale by John Keats in his Leeds accent when the teacher calls him a barbarian. The use of dialogue illustrates the conflict between the young Tony and the teacher and highlights their different attitudes awards literature. Together with this, Harrison uses a mixed diction, for example glorious heritage vs.. hawk up and spit out which dramatists the gap between the classes even more and also reflects Harridans inner conflict regarding which class he claims as his own. In addition to the necessity to conform, Harrison refers also to the sacrifices he made throughout his childhood because of his education. In the third stanza Harrison realizes his speech to be in the hands of the Receivers and through several metaphors en conveys the change trot en begins to change to become conventional which he conveys through several metaphors. l doffed my flat ass refers to the old fashioned custom to doff your hat to elders and betters as a sign of respect; Harrison is metaphorically doffing his hat to the middle classes by switching to RPR. Another poem Me Tarzan reflects similar notions of sacrifice, showing Harrison as a young boy who has to tell friends who didnt get into grammar school Ah bloody cant aware gray Latin prose meaning he cant go out t fishily because he has to do his Latin homework. Additionally, after the Volta in both Them and Lug] I II and Me Tarzan Harrison makes a conscious decision to stick by his school. The metaphor my mouth all stuffed with glottal great also shows his willingness to change his accent no matter the pain, but the word stuffed also suggests restraint. This could simply mean he doesnt want to change himself and he does so bitterly. However, it also alludes to the idea he is a better person and poet without a forced identity, also shown in his poem The Queens English. The line Wassails they puttee rods ret I his mouth emphasizes the idea that education conditioned him to be someone he neither was nor aspired to be. The use of the pun shut my trap in Them and Lug] supports this, suggesting that conformity will be a trap for his poetry, as well as him having to keep quiet and change his cultural orientation. Through doing this Harrison is effectively agreeing to the new middle class customs, which is inevitably going to have a huge impact on his life. This impact is reflected in the poem A Good Read where Harrison talks about how education affected his legislation with his Father. Contrary to his fathers working class traditions, Harrison became a passionate and interested academic; they both inhabited different worlds. A Good Read emphasizes this in the difference in dialogue, namely the fathers obvious Leeds accent, which is not at all mirrored by Harrison himself in the poem. Ah sometimes think you read too may books shows his fathers lack of understanding about his passion for literature, too many conveying the idea that he think it to be a pointless hobby a waste of time. This emphasizes the clash of class apparent twine both of them because of Tonys middle class education, he was introduced to a different lifestyle to his Fathers, with contradictory interests. Though education le d him to change; it also gave him the opportunity to discover who he really was. In the second part of Them and Lug] this is highlighted in the line Im Tony Harrison, no longer you and l spoke the language I spoke at home both showing Harridans revolt against what he had previously accepted as inherent social values because of his education. The reputation of [Uzi] [Uzi] Lug] heightens the ensign of doing this and sounds as if he is trying to reminding himself of his background and who he supposedly really is. Furthermore, the rhyme scheme in Them and Lug] part l is regular paired rhyme to reflect order, conversely in this stanza the rhyme scheme is full of half rhymes an act of rebellion. Nevertheless, the end of the poem suggests these efforts may have been in vain, specifically through the way his first mention in the Times is published. The upper-class, conservative newspaper automatically made Tony Anthony! I. E. They refused to abbreviate his first name. This conveys the idea that despite what Harrison wanted and tried to achieve, he had no choice; the established class structure dictated to him and to his art. In conclusion, much of Harridans poetry expresses his ambivalent feelings about how education affected his life. There is no doubt that his middle class education helped him become the poet he is, yet the question remains whether that is because it improved his work or because it gave him access into the world associated with it regardless, it was a choice he had to make. Old Man And The Sea Essays (1276 words) - Fish, Anthrozoology

Old Man And The Sea In the book, The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway tells a story of an old fisherman. The old man, named Santiago, had gone for eighty-four days without catching a fish. Santiago feels that the following day would be a good day because eighty-five is his lucky number. The following day he gets up before dawn and sets out for a day of fishing. He had set one bait at forty fathoms, the second at seventy-five fathoms, and the third and forth were at one hundred and one hundred and twenty-five fathoms. While Santiago is fishing he sees a bird trying to get a flying fish that was being chased by tuna. The old man tries to put his boat over the school of tuna in hope of getting a catch. Suddenly something hooked itself on the bait that was set at one hundred and twenty-five fathoms. The old man had caught a huge marlin that was now pulling him out to sea. The fish continued to pull the old man out to sea for about 3 days. The old man survived by putting one of his other lines out so that he could catch fish and eat them in order to keep his strength. On the third day he finally caught the fish. He had pulled the fish in slowly and then threw his harpoon at the fish's heart killing it instantly. The old man tied the fish to the side of his skiff and began to sail home. As he was sailing a shark took a large bite out of the fish he had caught. The old man harpooned the shark in his brain, and as the shark rolled off of the fish it took the old man's harpoon with it. The old man knew that there would be other sharks that would follow the scent of the fish's blood. He tied his knife to the butt of one of his oars. Two more sharks came and the old man killed them both. The second shark broke the blade as it rolled off the fish. Desperate, the old man waited for the other sharks. All he had left was a club, and he was going to use it. More sharks came, but this time in a pack. The old man desperately fought off the shark with his club, but the club was grabbed from his hands. He then ripped part of his boat off and attempted to fend off the sharks. In the end the sharks had eaten the fish down to the bone leaving the old man nothing. The old man noticed that his skiff sailed faster without the huge fish tied on to the side of his boat. When the old man got home he took all his belongings up to his shack where he rested. The old man dreamed about lions, and he was happy. The first, and main character in the book The Old Man and the Sea is in fact the old man, Santiago. The old man, Santiago, is a tough, persevering man with fishing in his blood. Santiago just wants to fish because that is what he lives to do. The old man constantly asks himself, "What would the great DiMaggio do in a situation like this?" This leads us to say that Santiago looks up to this base ball player whom he addresses as "The Great DiMaggio" constantly. I like the old man because he was a strong old man, and he was confident too. Even through the toughest tasks Santiago perseveres. The old man improvises and never gives up, just like when his fish was attacked by sharks. "But there was nothing to be done now. 'Yes there is,' he said aloud. 'I can lash my knife to the butt of one of the oars." Even in his darkest hours he kept on striving to protect his fish. He killed many sharks and when he ran out of weapons he continued to fight. "But the shark jerked backwards as he rolled and the knife blade snapped. ...reached under the stern for the club." The old man refused to give up. Santiago would fight the sharks until he died. "Fight them,' he said. 'I'll fight them until I die'" The other main character featured in this story was the boy, whose name is Manolin. There is not much background on Manolin, for he is not in most of the book. Manolin is a young boy who
